Species Information

General:
Annual herb from a slender taproot; stems several, scapose, glabrous.
Leaves:
Basal leaves numerous in a rosette; flower stalks slender, usually 1-3 times as long as the blades, blades egg-shaped, entire to deeply lobed, 1-3 cm long; stem leaves lacking.
Flowers:
Solitary on leafless stems, (2) 3-13 cm tall; petals white, about equalling the sepals in length; sepals usually red or purplish, 1.4-2 mm long.
Fruits:
Silicles, oblong-oval to suborbicular, 6-12 mm long; seeds 6-12, about 5 mm long, 3.5-5 mm wide including about 1 mm wide wing.

Habitat / Range

Moist seepages to dry rocky slopes in the lowland, steppe and montane zones; rare in SW BC, known only from S Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, rare eastward in S BC; S to ID and CA.
